What is being an au pair like?
Being an au pair is a very unique job - in my opinion it is really like being a big sister! Your host family really becomes like another family while you are living with them. When I was an au pair I would help the kids with homework, drive them to afterschool activities, we would play games, draw, paint - just to name a few!
As far as day-to-day activities, every family is different so every au pair role will be different and have unique responsibilities. It all depends on the lifestyle of your host family. If your host family has younger children that aren't in school yet then you will most likely take them to fun activities throughout the day - such as the library, the playground, the beach, and play dates. If your host family has school age children you can most likely expect to do school drop-offs and pick-ups, pack lunches, help with homework, take the kids to after-school activities, and other similar activities. During the summer I would often go away on holiday with my host family. We had so many amazing adventures together!
Being an au pair is very similar to being a nanny or a babysitter but obviously you are living in a different country with a new family! It is very exciting and an amazing way to meet new people and make friendships that will last a lifetime. I made so many friends while I was working as an au pair and I visited so many new and exciting places. I took this picture at one of Sydney's gorgeous beaches - it seems like everywhere you look in Australia there is a beautiful beach!
I would spend a lot of my days exploring the new cities I was living in. Having grown up in New England there were so many new things to do and see when I became an au pair in Australia. Sydney has so many amazing coastal walks - the views are absolutely breathtaking! You can walk along the cliffs running along the coastline - I spent many afternoons wandering along the coast just enjoying the amazing atmosphere. I love all of the coffee shops and restaurants - I learned how to brunch properly while I was an au pair in Melbourne! There are so many cozy cafes tucked in among the streets running along the beaches.
I loved being an au pair in Australia - it changed my life in so many amazing ways. How will it change yours?
